KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL
CENTENNIAL PARK, NSW
The Memorial design is a hybrid combination of sculpture and landscape that utilises layering and symbolism. Some of the symbolic gestures include use of the South Korean flag, the national flower “Rose of Sharon”, the harsh terrain of Korea, and significant events of the Korean War to create a memorial that signifies Commemoration, Regeneration and Remembrance.
Landscape concepts focus on balance of the strong and sculptural character on a mass of adjacent planted yuccas and the bold dense form of the mature fig trees. The memorial design establishes a preference for a lighter approach creates a series of massed vertical elements set within a wall that manipulates the ground plane.
