LITTLE SAIGON MULTI - LEVEL CARPARK
The Site is located within a busy shopping precinct vitally important to commercial life in the Footscray Central Activities Area. The area has strong and vibrant connections with the local Vietnamese community both socially and commercially. These works form part of the ongoing Little Saigon Precinct Revitalisation project which the City of Maribyrnong is championing. The projects consist of conversion of the existing on-grade carpark to a landscaped, open plaza with signature cafe, the creation of a four level, 142 space carpark on top of a retail podium and upgrades to the Byron Street road conditions between Leeds and Nicholson Streets.
GroupGSA’s role was as Architect and Landscape Architect for full services from design to completion. The brief was to create an integrated functional precinct incorporating a viable retail environment and public open space. GroupGSA worked closely with the Council to design an outcome that engages with and matches community vibrancy at street level while playfully cladding the car parking structure. Working with council-engaged local community artists, graphic art and pattern motifs have been skilfully incorporated into illuminated canopies and shop fronts. The Car park cladding panel design is also an outcome of GroupGSA working with council’s artists to echo patterns and themes using our algorithmic modelling BIM technology. The building was completed in 2017.
