8-24 Nicholson St, Wollstonecraft
Guided by Connecting with Country principles, the design honours local topography, water systems, and cultural narratives, particularly themes of matriliny, safety, and sanctuary, to embed meaning and identity into place.
Architecturally, the scheme adopts a podium and tower composition, transitioning between the emerging high-density precinct to the west and established residential character to the east. This fine-grain approach incorporates modulated façades, stepped massing, and a cohesive streetscape rhythm that enhance human scale and visual harmony. A rich, earth-toned material palette and layered landscaping root the project in its local sandstone and bushland context.
Landscape design is integral, featuring a “forest garden” at ground level and a rooftop garden overlooking Sydney Harbour, together enhancing biodiversity, social interaction, and connection to nature. Sustainability underpins every aspect, from passive design for light and ventilation to on-site renewable energy generation, water recycling, and electric mobility infrastructure.
The development provides 78 apartments, predominantly three-bedroom dwellings and designed for a down-sizing market, with generous cross-ventilation, natural light, and adaptable layouts, ensuring inclusivity and long-term resilience.
Overall, the design embodies density done well, balancing growth with liveability, sustainability, and cultural depth. It contributes positively to the evolving Wollstonecraft context, offering a distinctive, biophilic, and enduring residential community that harmonises architecture, landscape, and Country.
