Designing with Country

We are committed to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and strongly believe in reconciliation and collaboration for a better future.

Our responsibility as design caretakers is to ensure our country’s Traditional Owners are part of the design process from the outset. From inception and throughout a project’s lifecycle, our design process fosters a symbiotic relationship between Country and design. Intrinsic to this is the recognition of Country, people, and influence. We seek guardianship, knowledge, and leadership from Indigenous representatives to inform our understanding of people and place. We collaborate with First Nations consultants and the community to deepen our understanding—culturally, socially, and environmentally—of the Country and embed this knowledge into all our projects.

Reconciliation

When we design places, buildings, and infrastructure that respect connection to Country, we protect cultural heritage and bring richness as we work together to achieve reconciliation. As a practice, our reconciliation journey began in 2020 with the release of our ‘Designing with Country’ policy. In 2023, we established our first Reconciliation Action Plan to deepen our understanding and encourage a collective learning experience to create lasting legacies.

Connection to Country

All project understanding starts with Country. Engaging with and showing respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and knowledge has been a feature of our work for many years. We demonstrate active connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
communities through designing environments and buildings informed by a ‘Connection to Country’ approach for our clients and collaborators.

Collaboration

We wholeheartedly advocate for the engagement and integration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consultants and creatives across the project lifecycle. We actively seek opportunities to source Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander insights and inputs and regularly engage First Nations consultants, collaborators, and artists on our projects.
