State-of-the-art sports hub in regional VIC

The precinct is in the expanding township of New Gisborne in regional Victoria and is an attractive peri-urban centre that has exceeded anticipated population growth. Macedon Ranges Shire Council engaged the Cities and Places, landscape architecture team to provide the Concept Design intent for a state-of-the-art sports hub. Our masterplan incorporated a comprehensive vision of transforming the existing Netball Pavilion site and the adjoining vacant land into a precinct incorporating sports hubs for basketball, cricket ovals, tennis courts, and recreation opportunities, including playgrounds, fitness loops, outdoor gyms, and picnic settings.  It integrates four key site-wide urban design strategies, prioritising cultivating a quality experience to foster connections, activation, accessibility, inclusivity and safety.

We devised four key site-wide landscape strategies to reflect the environmental qualities of the surrounding natural setting.   These strategies preserve the existing areas of high-value native vegetation, balance the use of native and exotic species, introduce a water story to the site with a functional and recreational purpose, and provide multifaceted opportunities for active and passive recreation.

The Oval Pavilion site features various external landscape elements, including a retention basin, outdoor exercise equipment, playgrounds, BBQ areas, bridges, vegetated swales, and scenic viewing decks.

The site, divided by a public road encompassing 15 hectares, is powered by a 120kW solar panel array and sophisticated energy monitoring systems, ensuring sustainability and efficiency.

The Macedon Ranges Sports Precinct is a two-stage ~$44.5 million project incorporating expansive indoor and outdoor recreation. Stage One officially opened on Friday, June 28, 2024.

The Hon. Ros Spence MP, Minister for Community Sports Victoria, said,  “The Labor Government is fair dinkum about encouraging participation in community sport, and you can only do that if you’ve got the appropriate accessible facilities that draw people in…and boost that it’s not just about team sports, there’s also 14 hectares for active recreation so it’s a place for everyone… We now have this intergenerational facility to service our community for many years.
